Tutoring

A decision to include a tutor in the educational journey of your child is a very important one.  Whether the student needs some extra help in a difficult class, has fallen a little behind, or simply want to stay on track, a tutor can represent that structure a child often needs to represent his/her goals.

Here are some suggestions that you and your child should read over together to fully understand what the tutoring process is about.

Tutoring can help your child in many more ways than just improving grades

-Higher self esteem in school and with friends and family.  Renewed confidence in schoolwork can boost a child’s self esteem in all aspects of their life.  And because performance at school is so often tied into rewards and punishments at home, children are naturally happier and more confident when their grades are rising.

-Decreasing behavior problems in school and at home.  Once a student is taking a more active role in their education, they tend to focus more on the teacher in the class, in turn becoming more distracted from talking peers.  Also, the more confidants a student is in their ability, the more that student will strive to succeed.

-More involvement in extracurricular activities.  Renewed confidence in any subject area can push the once apprehensive student to get involved in the school newspaper or math club that once seemed too intimidating.

Successful Tutor Time Tips for Parents and Students

Here are just a few suggestions that I have found make the tutoring process run a little more smoothly.  Read over these tips together and brainstorm ways to make each suggestion a real plan that both parent and student actively work on.

Make sure there is a quiet area to work in.  Although the kitchen table may be where you usually do homework, more can be accomplished without distractions like the phone ringing, the dog running through the house, or someone stopping to get a snack in the fridge.  And, the more work you get done with your tutor, the less you’ll have to do later!!

Remember to bring your book and notebook home, even if you don’t have homework!! – Remembering to bring your work home is very important!  Without a book to look back in, or homework to complete, the time you spend with your tutor will not be very successful.  You would never go to a baseball game without your uniform, or a music lesson without your instrument, right?  Being prepared is half the battle!

Take active notes during the day.  Circle problems on homework you really didn’t understand, or write questions down that didn’t get answered in class.  Remember, a tutor is here to help you better understand what you are working on school, and if you don’t ask questions, the tutor won’t know what you are having problem with.

If your teacher allows you to keep tests and quizzes, save them!  Reviewing old tests keeps the information fresh in your mind!  Often students don’t go over mistakes on tests and quizzes, and when you can completely understand the work from last week, you are more likely to understand today’s work.

COMMUNICATE!!

Perhaps the most important factor in the success of tutoring sessions is communication.  Keep an open line of communication between the teacher, student, parent and tutor.  Each member of the student’s support system is integral to his or her success.

Student  Ask questions!!  Ask Questions!!  Ask Questions!!  You have the responsibility of communicating with your teacher concerning questions on schoolwork and suggestions on how to improve.  Equally important is relating these questions and concerns to the tutor.  It is very important for each student to take an active role in his or her sessions in order for progress to occur.

Parent You are your child’s advocate!  Get Involved!  Schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher and let him/her know that you are thinking of hiring a tutor.  The teacher has the most knowledge about what your child may need educationally.  Inquire about what else may be done to help your child.  Also, communicate with the tutor, check on progress, and ask for weekly phone calls.  Remember, a tutor’s job is to help meet your child’s educational goals.  Take an active role in making sure these goals are being met!

I encourage each parent and student to ask for progress meetings at each month mark, and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
